DC & Marvel Break the Internet, Priest talks Vampirella, & New Comic Reviews

Published 2 months ago • 1 min read

This week saw a lot of really unexpected announcements. For example, Marvel just announced the cast of The Fantastic Four movie. Now I'm super excited about the MCU again. But they didn't stop there. Marvel and DC Comics just announced two omnibus editions collecting nearly ALL of their storied Crossovers!

DC Versus Marvel and DC Versus Marvel: The Amalgam Age are both available for pre-order now, and release on August 6th in the direct market and select bookstores. You can score each for 40% off cover if you grab them from Organic Priced Books and tell them I sent you.

New Comic Reviews: 2/14/24

This week felt tame in comparison to the some of the bangers we started the year with, but we still had some solid comics released this week.

Batman #143 | Chip Zdarsky (w) Andrea Sorrentino, Giuseppe Camuncoli (a) | The Joker: Year One part two adds some really interesting things to the Joker/Batman dynamic. The way Zdarsky is tying their origins together is done really well, and should have some interesting Zur-En-Arrh implications when this is all over. Just one more installment to go. Highly recommended.

Fall of the House of X #2 | Gerry Duggan (w) Lucas Werneck (a) | The next installment gives us an update on just how the mutants are fighting back against Orchis' last stand. There are some exciting moments, and some moments that feel like stalling. Oh well. 4 more months until the Krakoa era ends.

Red Hood: The Hill #1 | Shawn Martinbrough (w) Sanford Greene (a) | Jason Todd returns to The Hill, a previously underserved neighborhood in Gotham. Thanks to gentrification, real estate is on the come up there, which means new villains are on the rise. Jason and a new team of vigilantes will have to act soon. The real draw here was Sanford Greene on interior art, but I really love the picture Martinbrough is painting of a close-knit, multicultural neighborhood. I'm excited to see where this goes.

On The Podcast

Today, I'm excited to present part 3 of my conversation with Christopher Priest. We talk about why he chose to write Vampirella, how he balances creativity with his personal faith, and his forays into creator-owned comics. HUGE thanks to Dynamite Entertainment for trusting me to help Priest tell his story.

The Final Word

Last week, I wrote a piece detailing my complicated feelings about Marvel and DC's Black History Month anthologies. Shout out to Kevin for reminding me to plug it here. It's a message I think might be misconstrued if left in video format, but still something I thought was important to say.

If you have thoughts after reading, I'd love to hear about them in a reply to this e-mail, or a comment on the post!

Til next time,

Does your to-be-read pile ever feel like a never-ending abyss you've fallen into? Are you embarrassed when a long-delayed issue 2 comes out, and you still haven't read issue 1? Have you ever misplaced an entire week of single issues you purchased? Me either. Okay... I'm lying. But you knew that already. The good news is I made a significant dent in my to-read pile this weekend, and an interview-free week means I should be 100% caught up by this Friday, for the first time in a while. There's a...

This was a sad week in comics. There's just no way around that statement, and I'm still in a somber mood over it all. We lost artist Mark D. Bright, whose work with Dwayne McDuffie on Icon opened me up to the Milestone Comics universe. But there's another tragedy rightfully taking over the headlines. Cartoonist Ed Piskor passed away Monday morning, marking a tragic end to an unfortunate scandal that had been brewing for the previous week. I mentioned the sobering nature of the allegations...

I feel so off-track to start the week. I started the day with a job interview, and ended it with a sick toddler. Safe to say, I’m already behind on my To-Do List. I figured I’d type this e-mail from my iPad while I snuggle up next to the toddler and watch Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood for the 74th time today. Let’s review a few comics I picked up last Wednesday. New Comic Reviews: 3/20/24 Black Panther #10 | Eve Ewing (w), Chris Allen (a) | Volume 10 of Black Panther is over, and MAN did that...
